Art Therapy

What it is
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art as a means of communication. Art therapy offers the opportunity for expression and communication of thoughts and feelings.
How it helps
Art therapy offers an alternative route towards clients developing the capacity to relate to themselves in a healthy way. Art therapy allows for the expression and controlled release of strong and powerful feelings that are often associated with suffering with an eating disorder.
Why it is effective
Art therapy can be particularly helpful for people who struggle to express their thoughts and feelings verbally. Through artistic expression, clients can gain access to their inner feelings and find ways to work through them.
Outcome of treatment
The overall aim of art therapy is to enable practitioners to work with clients to help them effect change and growth on a personal level through the use of art materials in a safe and facilitating environment.
Cognitive Analytical Therapy – CAT
£100 per hour
What it is
It is a time-limited therapy which focuses on repeating patterns that were set up in childhood as a way of coping with emotional difficulties and deprivations. The CAT therapist and the patient, work together to recognise their maladaptive patterns and then to revise and change the patterns.
How it helps
With a focus on identifying negative thought patterns, this treatment may be able to help clients understand specific psychological components of their eating disorders by considering past experiences and events; and then to revise and change the patterns.
Why it is effective
It enables patients and therapist to identify the cause of their eating disorder so it is easily treated.
Outcome of treatment

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – CBT

What it is
It is a branch of psychotherapy that is based on the idea that all thoughts and actions are related. It also aims to help individuals break down problems or situations into more manageable parts and examine the ways in which thoughts, emotions and actions were related in each.
How it helps
Once the relationship between thoughts, emotions and actions are understood; the individual suffering from an eating disorder can replace the negative thoughts and emotions which have led to abnormal food and eating behaviours and with more positive thoughts and emotions that will lead back towards a healthy lifestyle.
Why it is effective
It is direct and thorough in details of eating habits; This type of therapy is done to change how you think and feel about food, eating and body image.
Outcome of treatment
It replaces negative thoughts towards food and eating with positive thoughts. It is more effective in Bulimia than other eating disorders.
Clinical Psychology

What it is
A talking therapy that is individual to each clients needs. A clinical psychologist may use a variety of therapeutic interventions to work with a client at the stage they are at in the most appropriate way.
How it helps
Eating disorders are usually always the result of underlying psychological problems. Talking through things with a psychologist can help clients understand their eating disorder and the origins and from there they can begin to work on how to overcome it.
Why it is effective
Psychotherapy helps clients to find new ways of approaching situations that they find difficult and new methods to help them deal with them. The psychologist will work with a client to overcome a specific or general problems, problematic thoughts and behaviours.

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy – DBT

What it is
It is a combination of cognitive and behavioural therapies to teach people healthy ways to handle painful emotions through acceptance and change. DBT uses four skill sets – interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and mindfulness – to improve people’s coping skills.
How it helps
DBT teaches eating disorder sufferers to identify triggers for disordered eating.
Why it is effective
It helps sufferers find better ways to respond to stress, such as breathing or relaxation exercises, taking an emotional timeout, or finding a healthy distraction. It also guides eating disorder sufferers through the practice of mindful eating, increasing awareness of emotional responses to food while preparing and eating meals.

Dietetics Specialist

What it is
It is the interpretation and communication of the science of nutrition.
How it helps
Dietetics enables people to make informed and practical choices about food and lifestyle, in both health and disease.

It enables patients to know the best nutrition for their body.
Outcome of treatment
Patients awareness about the best nutrition for their body enables them to develop a healthy lifestyle.
Family Therapy
£100 per hour
What it is
They are sessions conducted with both the individual suffering from an eating disorder and his/her closest family members.
How it helps
They are intended to treat everyone in attendance. Very often family members will not even realize their involvement in an eating disorder until these sessions, nor will they truly understand the eating disorder without a professional explanation.
Why it is effective
Whether they want to or not, families must make changes in order to accommodate the needs produced by an eating disorder and it is this growth that is facilitated through family therapy sessions.
Outcome of treatment
Family therapy allows them to investigate how the eating disorder has affected their own lives and how they can be supportive throughout the recovery process as well.
Motivational Enhancement Therapy – MET
£80 per hour
What it is
A style of person-centred counselling developed to facilitate changes in behaviour. MET is most commonly used to treat eating disorders but can also aid with panic attacks and trauma.
How it helps
MET helps the individual to understand the function of their eating disorder and work on their personal motivation for change.
Why it is effective
The therapist will help the patient to explore and resolve their ambivalence about recovery. Helps to change patterns of behaviour that have become habitual.
Outcome of treatment
To show the patient the value of changing their behaviour, thereby bringing about positive change and a strong desire to maintain the changes over time.
Nutritional Therapy (Specialist)
£100 per hour
What it is
Education for patients with eating disorders surrounding food and nutrition. Gives detail around portion size, healthy eating, essential vitamins for the body and individual bodily requirements.
How it helps
The nutritionist aims to improve patient’s nutrition and health related knowledge, emphasise the benefits of change and discuss barriers to change. Aside from the benefits to eating disorder patients, our nutritionist can also offer specific allergy testing and provides nutritional support for sports coaching and a range of individuals both with and without an eating disorder.
Why it is effective
It helps the individual to see that their perceptions of a healthy diet may be wrong and provide evidence based information to encourage and promote healthy lifestyles. Educates clients about nutrition and gives practical advice and skills to carry on into everyday life.
Outcome of treatment
Improve patient’s knowledge of nutrition and their dietary intake. This can also decrease a client’s level of anxiety around food and challenges.
Parent Support
£80 per hour
What it is
Guidance and support for parents/carers with young people with mental health and/or eating disorder in Breathe Therapies.
How it helps
This support session gives reassurance, advice and information on what to expect in their child’s recovery process, helping the parents/carers to support their child in the most appropriate way.
Why it is effective
It is important that the parents/carers understands what is happening for their child and what their child needs in order to provide the best parental support during recovery.
Outcome of treatment
A calm and knowledgeable parent/carer who understands what their child is going through and what their needs are will be best placed to support their child through their recovery.
Psychosexual Therapy

What it is
Sessions with a psychosexual specialist specifically for those who are experiencing problems of a psychological, sexual nature. Sexual difficulties are very common and can have many causes.
How it helps
Within the session, you will explore the connections between mind and body.
Why it is effective
Exploring your psychosexual experiences with a specialist will enable you to overcome any sexual issues in a safe space.
Outcome of treatment

Somatic Dance Therapy

What it is
Dance therapy is the psychotherapeutic use of dance and movement to support emotional, intellectual and physical functions of the body.
How it helps
Through this exposure the professional will, with the client, explore movement to work towards achieving cognitive, social, physical and emotional integration.
Why it is effective
Research has proven that dance therapy is effective in the treatment of a variety of mental health issues such as; depression, anxiety and eating disorders. Specialist Supportive Clinical Management – SSCM

What it is
The focus is on the bio-psycho-social wellbeing of the individual. This involves risk assessments, mental and physical health assessments, goal setting, reviews, psycho-education, family interventions and more, delivered in a person centric, needs led way.
How it helps
The clinical management of an individual involves the alleviate of symptoms of the eating disorder and a supportive psychotherapeutic approach to the thoughts, feelings and beliefs around the person’s behaviour and issues that are identified by them to being important.
Outcome of treatment
As treatment progresses less focus is on clinical management of a patient as they become more stable and the focus shifts to more supportive psychotherapy.

Free Consultation
What it is
This is a free 20 minute telephone consultation following an enquiry between the potential client/family member/carer regarding one of the four pathways: eating disorders, weight management, psychological therapies, well-being.
How it helps
The client can discuss any concerns or queries regarding treatment in more detail with the Clinical Director with a view to securing an assessment.
Why it is effective
Over the telephone or by meeting with the clinical director what the treatment service can offer you can be discussed in relation to meeting your needs. This first point of contact is essential in finding out where you are in your journey and what your presenting issues are right now that you need support with.
Outcome of treatment
Depending on the needs of the individual an outcome may be to have an eating disorder, mental health or weight management assessment by an experienced professional in that area, or for you to commence therapy with a clinicians or for a bespoke treatment package to be created for you.
Eating Disorder Assessment
£189 for 2 hours
What it is
Before beginning treatment an assessment will take place. This will be a two hour session with a Specialist Mental Health Nurse or an Integrative Psychotherapist. The assessment is person centered and looks at the individual’s presenting needs. It will assess current and previous difficulties in order to create a care plan best suited to the individual.
How it helps
This allows the professional to assess what type and level of care the individual needs to looking at their present state and needs; enabling them to put together an treatment package bespoke to the individual.
Why it is effective
The assessment creates the opportunity for an experienced mental health professional to assess the needs of an individual and what they are going to require in the short term and long term based on their present condition; thoughts, feelings and behaviours regarding themselves and the world. They take into account past and present experiences and the bio-psycho-social wellbeing of the individual.
Outcome of treatment
The clinician will create an individualised treatment plan for the person that will meet their needs and support them in their recovery from an eating disorder.
CPA Meeting

These will take place with the individual and professionals involved in their care to discuss the care plan in place and make any necessary changes.
MDT Meeting

What it is
Multidisciplinary team meeting where professionals and clinicians meet to discuss a patient’s treatment and work together to meet the needs of the individual.
How it helps
Ensures that professionals are coordinating an individual’s treatment to the best of their capability and continuously meeting the needs of the client.
Why it is effective
Multidisciplinary team meetings take place to benefit the client as their needs, circumstances or welfare changes their treatment can be adapted to meet them where they are at. Essential to promoting a team approach to dealing with eating disorders, mental health issues and weight management.

It provides real time (live) access to the individual treatment plan, meal time planner and nutritional needs setting, assign weekly goals, access to food, feeling and thought logs. You will receive personal support from the Eating Disorder Recovery Coach on the app and have four hour long coaching sessions a month.
How it helps
The app enables the individual to have real time support on a day-to-day bases at times when they are not only facing challenges or difficulties which require support, but when they have succeeded or overcome fears and anxieties. The coaching sessions enable the client to discuss in person any difficulties or challenges, work on motivation and be learn more skills to equip them in their recovery.

Clients have a resource which they can access at all times on their mobile phone, that is in contact with an Eating Disorder Recovery Coach, Nurse or mental health professional to support them on an ongoing basis.

Empowering you to create a nourishing future. A practical course for individuals with a difficultly around food/ eating distress who wish to learn more about preparing simple meals in a safe and therapeutic environment. All ingredients for recipes are provided. Meals can be gluten, yeast, lactose and wheat free. Please advise when booking if you have any additional special dietary requirements.
